Islamabad: Eleven years after the Kargil War, the Pakistan Army which has been denying its role in the conflict has quietly put the names of 453 soldiers and officers killed in the battle on its website.



Proof of the involvement of regular Pakistani soldiers in the 1999 Kargil War over a string of strategic heights in the Kargil sector of the Line of Control in 1999 has come from an institution that spent years denying its role in the hostilities with India ? the Pakistan Army.



The 453 Pakistani soldiers were shown killed in Batalik-Kargil sector in Jammu and Kashmir.



The names of those who died in Kargil are tucked away in a list of thousands of personnel killed while on duty that has been posted in the "Shuhada's Corner" (Martyrs Corner) of the website.

Reminds me of what Air Chief Mehra saab, when he shared his anguish with me about having an enemy army that is so low on honour and dignity, to not even claim their dead who died in Kargil.

China still depends on Russia not only for jet Engines but also for other weapons as well.



I think neither China nor India can become an independent air power without an indigenous engine.



So called Jxxx stealth is most likely powered by 117s Russian engines (China also placed an order for 300 AL-31 Russian engines in 2005 for J10s (old news) and planning to order more engines for its other fighters J11s, from Chernyshev plant, Russia)



It does not mean Jxxx design is not a copy. J-20 or Jxxx is certainly similar to the MiG 1-42 and 1-44, F22 and even F35



IAF wanted Mig to build its stealth fighter but Russians preferred sukhoi.

BEIJING (AP) — Photos leaked online that appear to show a prototype of China’s first stealth fighter jet were discussed in state media Wednesday — a move that supports claims the country’s military aviation program is advancing faster than expected.



Both the English and Chinese language editions of the Global Times ran front-page articles on the photos of what appears to be a future J-20 fighter, along with extensive reports on the buzz the pictures have generated overseas.



Photos of the plane appeared on unofficial military news websites and hobbyist blogs last week and were still viewable Wednesday

New Delhi China now has the capability to deploy and sustain more than half-a-million troops for over a month on the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in case of a high threat scenario with India. Combining deft defence diplomacy with India’s neighbours and major infrastructure upgradation in restive Xinjiang and Tibet, Beijing is expected to be increasingly assertive towards New Delhi and may put pressure on Arunachal Pradesh in near future.



This threat perception and assessment in the form of a presentation in South Block was given to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Defence Minister A K Antony, National Security Adviser S S Menon, Principal Secretary T K Nair and Defence Secretary Pradeep Kumar by the Indian military brass last month.



While the government is tight-lipped about the presentation, the military brass told the PM that Chinese PLA has acquired the capability to deploy 34 troop divisions (one division has 23,000 troops) along the LAC in case of a high threat scenario by pulling out troops from Chengdu and Lanzhou military regions. When compared to the Indian strength of nine holding divisions along the northern borders, the PLA with a defence budget estimated at $150 billion holds overwhelming advantage.



As part of major infrastructure upgradation in Tibet and Xinjiang, China is doing the following:



Connection with all counties in Tibet with border roads completed. Road network increased from 51,000 km in 2008 to 58,000 km in 2010. Plans to increase black topped roads by another 70,000 km on the anvil.



Extension of Qinghai-Tibet Railway from Golmund to Lhasa and thereon to Shigatse (close to Sikkim). Rail connectivity is planned to link Kathmandu, Myanmar, Bhutan, Pakistan and Central Asian republics. Eleven new rail lines on the anvil in Tibet and Xinjiang for rapid deployment of PLA.



There are eight airfields in Tibet, including five operational ones; 18 air bases in Tibet and Xinjiang have the capability to put India under range of Sukhoi 27 aircraft.



The Indian security concerns get multiplied when this Chinese advantage is backed with an all-weather friend like Pakistan. Beijing is in the process of supplying four F-22 frigates along with JF-17 aircraft to Islamabad. PLA has pushed some 1,000 troops in PoK for upgradation of Karakoram Highway and to link it with sea ports of Karachi, Gwadar and Bin Qassim. This will not only give strategic depth to Pakistan but also allow PLA to control the Persian Gulf.



China’s Dong Fang Electric Supply Corporation and Pakistan Railways have also signed a feasibility study contract on a Havelian-Khunjerab Pass rail link. The military brass also gave information on Chinese inroads into Nepal, Myanmar, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

Chinese foreign ministry said it had not seen any proposal to build a naval base in Pakistan. The statement amounts to a rejection of Pakistani defense minister Ahmad Mukhtar's claim that his government was pushing [url="http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/Beijing"]Beijing[/url] to build a naval base near the Gawdar port.



"China and Pakistan are friendly neighbors. Jiang's statement is significant because it comes after the Taliban attack on a naval base in Pakistan, and the four-day China tour by the country's prime minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani.



"It's my understanding that during the visit last week this issue was not touched upon," Jiang said.

The PLA has replaced liquid-fueled, nuclear-capable CSS-2 IRBMs with more advanced and survivable solid-fueled CSS-5 MRBM systems to strengthen its deterrent posture relative to India, the Pentagon has said in its annual report on Chinese military build up to the Congress.



The report also says that Beijing is pumping in huge investments on border infrastructure developments laying more roads and rail network along the Sino-Indian border.



"Although this construction is primarily aimed at facilitating economic development in western China, improved roads could also support PLA border defense operations," it said.



Pentagon said that New Delhi remains concerned by China's close military ties with Pakistan and its growing footprints in the Indian Ocean, Central Asia and Africa.

[center][left]Tajikistan-Russia: An agreement for a Russian military base in Tajikistan will be extended for 49 years, Russian President Medvedev said on 2 September. Medvedev and Tajik President Rakhmon reached the agreement during a meeting in Dushanbe.

Medvedev said the leaders told the departments and agencies concerned with the agreement that it would be extended for 49 years. The agreement is scheduled to be signed in the first quarter of 2012. Russia will train, re-equip and modernize the Tajik army in exchange for the extension the military base lease.



Comment: After a brief US interlude, Central Asia is returning to normality. Normality means that the Russians are the closest and most powerful protectors of Central Asians from domination by the Han Chinese. The Russians are reasserting their strategic interests.

This has been stated in a report sent by Leh district administration to the state government, highlighting the point that while the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) deployed in the area has sent the report of this incident to the ministry of home affairs, local administration was kept in dark, official sources told Hindustan Times.

New Delhi: Around 4,000 Chinese including the troops of the People’s Liberation Army of China are in Pakistan-administered -Kashmir (PaK), Army Chief Gen V K Singh said Wednesday amid the unease in the Indian establishment over their presence there.



“There are certain construction working teams, a large number is available. Around 3,000 to 4,000 of these people are present including certain people for security purposes. There are certain engineers troops. Now (like) our own engineers are combat engineers. [color="#8B0000"]So, in some way they are part of the PLA,” he told reporters here[/color]. {Arun" WTF is this? coming from Indian Army Chief!}



The Army Chief was responding to a query on the presence of Chinese Army troops in the PaK on the sidelines of the 16th Field Marshal K M Cariappa Memorial Lecture delivered by National Security Adviser Shivshankar Menon.



The statement comes against the backdrop of concerns in India about the presence and engagement of Chinese troops in PaK, which India considers as its own land.

IAF Chief N A K Browne had made this clear when he said in an interview that increasing presence of China in PaK warrants India’s “attention”. New Delhi has already conveyed its concerns to China over the presence of its troops in PaK and its activities in that region.

Last year, there were reports of presence of about 11,000 Chinese troops in Jammu and Kashmir’s Gilgit-Baltistan region held by Pakistan but Beijing said there was no wrong-doing.



Recently, a senior Indian Army commander had said that Chinese are are mainly engaged in construction activities of highways and dams in PaK as well as the northern areas which are very close to the LoC.



Asked about the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir, Gen Singh said the terrorist infrastructure across the Line of Control was intact and a large number of militants are trying to infiltrate.



“The militant infrastructure (across the LoC) is intact. A concentration of large number of militants on the other side exists and they are trying to infiltrate. We are making sure that their efforts fail,” the Army chief said.



Gen Singh said efforts are being made to step up infiltration from across the LoC but the Army was alert and ready to face any threat.

GOI seems desperate to keep the LAC quiet. Thus GOI turns the other cheek on Chinese intrusions. The official GOI response about the non-delineation of the LAC being responsible for these intrusions does not wash as China has blocked all efforts to delineate the line.
