We have had this discussion on interpretation of 'real'. Your definition of reality seems to be tied with assertion or deep belief. According to this, even delusion can be considered reality, which in the vedantic sense - or any other sense - is simply wrong.

In no uncertain terms, Bible is not Shruthi. Thus it is not a pramaana. Hence hell cannot be "REAL". <!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Sundar ji,
There is a misunderstanding here. When I said that hell and heavenly-mist are real for Christians I was not expressing my opinion. I was merely pointing out Christian beliefs. I agree with you that Christians will go nowhere unless they have by some means purified their heart. Mere belief is a road to nowhere.

When I say something is real I do not mean deep belief. I mean that a 'real' thing is not merely a mental construct but exists independent of our mind. Christian position is very different. Their position is since neither heaven nor hell nor God can be seen by any means the only choice is to blindly believe in such things.

You have also said that Christian God is not universal. I would like to say that the Christian IDEA of God is very narrow. They say that only their God is real and all other Gods are false. My position is that of Radhakrishnan who comments (Gita 4.11) that 'The spiritually immature are unwilling to recogize other Gods than their own. Their attachment to their creed makes them blind to the larger unity of the Godhead. This is the result of egotism in the domain of religious ideas.' The Christian God also has to be Brahman if Brahman is ALL.

<b>Teaching the rich how to breathe is not enough’</b><!--QuoteBegin-->QUOTE<!--QuoteEBegin-->NEW DELHI, FEBRUARY 26: At the India Today conclave on Saturday, lyricist Javed Akhtar locked horns with Art of Living proponent Sri Sri Ravishankar in a battle of wits, each debating on the central theme ‘Spiritualism — a halo or hoax?’

<b>Ravishankar said: ‘‘To say that spiritualism is hoax would not be right. Similarly, to claim that the over two lakh religious gurus in this country have attained halo will be equally erroneous.’’ </b>

Drawing the lines between fanaticism and spiritualism, the proponent of the patented sudarshan kriya said: ‘‘Studies have shown violence is highest where spirituality is the lowest.’’

Akhtar drew laughter from the audience when he said: ‘‘The difference between us in the make-believe world of film industry and the gurus is at the end of the film we put up the card ‘The End’ for the audiences to come back to reality, which the spiritualists don’t.’’

Akhtar added, ‘‘Simply teaching the rich how to breathe is not enough,’’ a veiled dig at Ravishankar, to which he replied that there was nothing wrong in including the rich in popular spiritual practices.

Suggesting that a spiritual leader needs to do more than ‘‘teach cosmic consciousness’’, Akhtar asked: ‘‘Where are the spiritualists when there are communal tensions?”

<b>Ravishankar said he would not accept anything that is irrational: “Indian spiritualism, which goes back as long as time, is based on science.”</b> <!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Namaste to all.

Some of you may have heard of Project Implicit. This is a large experiment being conducted by the Harvard psychology department. The idea is to gain insight into our unconscious perception of ideas/entities as bad or good.

The reason I'm starting this thread is because they have recently added a new section for Indians (one of five or six world groups). This section includes tests on Hindu vs Muslim and India vs Pak ideas. I feel that taking this test may in a small way help us understand ourselves and our reactions w.r.t. these ideas. Please note that you are not required to enter personal information. You can leave the fields blank and hit continue. If you do enter something, it will probably be used for statistical analysis. Let us not enter false info - better to leave it blank.

the website is here

I request the admins to allow this thread/move to the right location it it is inappropriate here.

<!--QuoteBegin-->QUOTE<!--QuoteEBegin-->Sri Krishna has nothing to do with Christianity

Hare Krishna,

Vedic  Scriptures are the basis of Vedic faith. None of the  scriptures  indicates any relation between Bhagavan Sri Krishna  and Jesus Christ .

I agree that , Jesus was a great soul and the entire world respect him for his great contributions to humanity. But, his philosophy is not based on vedic aspects.

Swami Prabhupada’s mission abroad  was to  attract Christians to Vaishnavism. Diplomacy, patience and step-by-step preaching  were needed to achieve this transition. In this process, Swami Prabhupada had to provide several explanations (like glorifying the yogic attributes of Christ) in order to convince the budding  vaishnava aspirants within Christian community. These specific teachings of the Swami were not at all meant for the pure vaishnavas.

If we study the functioning of consecrated Sri Krishna temples (like Gurvayoor), we can find the Deities to be  true replicas of Krishna,  that breathes life.

In fact,  the ‘Deity’ at Guruvayoor had been worshipped by Sri Krishna Himself while living in  Dwaraka. As per His prior-instruction, after the destruction of Dwaraka, the ‘Deity’ was installed and consecrated by Brihaspati and Vayudeva, at Guruvayoor. The functioning   of this temple is in accordance with Sri Krishna’s wishes which are being revealed to the temple’s authorized Tantrics and Vedic astrologers, as and when required. As desired by the Bhagavan, non-hindus are not allowed entry inside the temple.

Initially, Adi Sanakaracharya  had rejected deity-worship and refused to identify the supremacy of Lord Krishna. Once, by yogic power He was traveling by air over Guruvayoor temple and did not bother to care Sri Krishna. The Bhagavan got annoyed at this arrogance and  pulled Sankara down. (There is a hole in the northern side of Guruvayoor temple where Sankara fell down). This incident changed Shankara totally. He cried for the Bhagavan’s pardon and recited a beautiful  hymn praising Sri Krishna as the Godhead.  Bhagavan Krishna pardoned Sankara, gave vision and blessed him. As instructed by the Bhagavan , Sankara stayed in Guruvayoor temple for (41) days and established rules and regulations for the worship.

Lord Sastha is the son of Mohini (incarnation of Vishnu) and Siva. Therefore , we can find Sastha as auxiliary Deity (Parivara Devata) in many vaishnava temples like Guruvayoor. Also Siva, Durga and Ganesh are allowed as auxiliary Deities in vaishnava temples.  But, can any one show a deity of ‘Christ’ within the premises of any consecrated ( based on vaishnava AGAMAS)  temple?. Does any qualified vedic astrologer accept Christ as Krishna’s son?.

‘ Narayaneeyam ‘  ( written by Melpathoor Narayana Bhattatiri in the year 1587 ) is a condensation of Bhagavata purana. This hymn  is a conversation between Bhattatiri and Sri Krishna, in Guruvayoor temple. The entire  ‘Narayaneeyam’  was  approved by Bhagavan Krishna, Himself . Soon after completing this hymn, Bhattatiri’s  incurable paralysis disappeared. In Narayaneeyam, we can find  the following information :

There are some ambiguities in the Vedas , which requires correct interpretation.
Krishna is the Supreme God. He is Mahavishnu. His incarnations are  Rama, Parasurama, Narasimha, Vamana, etc.
Adi Sankara has acknowledged Sri Krishna (Mahavishnu) as the Godhead.  His commentaries for Gita and Vishnu Sahasranama reveals this fact.
The correct worship is that of Sri Krishna who is pure ‘Sathwic’ . The benefits of  worshipping other Devatas are given by Krishna, Himself.
( Note - : All main events associated with Sri Krishna till 27th November 1587 have been mentioned in ‘Narayayeneeyam. We can not find any indication about ‘Jesus Christ ’ or his philosphy in this sacred most recent hymn . This confirms that Sri Krishna has nothing to do with the anti-vedic Christianity. If a follower of Vaishnavism,  goes to church and partakes bread and wine (flesh and blood of Christ), he is no more a Vaishnava).

Bhagavan Krishna does not entertain non-believers and He has clarified it in the following verses of Gita :

Chapter 3, Sloka 32

ye tv etad abhyasuyanto / nanutisthanti me matam
sarva-jnana-vimudhams tan / viddhi nastan acetasah

(But know that those envious persons who do not follow these instructions of Mine are bereft of discrimination and all true jnana, and are ruined in their endeavours for perfection.)

Chapter 7, Sloka 15

na mam duskrtino mudhah / prapayante naradhamah
mayayapahrta-jnana / asuram bhavam asritah

(Those miscreants and fools who are devoid of discrimination, who are the lowest among human beings, whose knowledge has been completely stolen by maya, and who have an asuric nature, do not surrender unto Me.)

Chapter 9, Sloka 11

avajananti mam mudha / manusim tanum asritam
param bhavam ajananto / mama bhuta-mahesvaram

( When I appear in My human-like form, foolish people with mundane intelligence disrespect Me, because they cannot comprehend My nature as the Supreme Lord of all beings. )

Chapter 9, Sloka 12

moghasa mogha-karmano / mogha-jnana vicetasah
raksasim asurincaiva / prakrtim mohinim sritah

(The hopes of such foolish people for liberation, fruitful gain and the culture
of jnana all go in vain. Thus, with their minds distracted, they adopt the
deluded nature of atheists and asuras. )

Chapter 9, Sloka 66-68 :

sarva-dharman parityajya / mam ekam saranam vraja

aham tvam sarva-papebhyo / moksayisyami ma sucah

idante natapaskaya / nabhaktaya kadacana

na casusrusave vacyam / na ca mam yo 'bhyasuyati

ya imam paramam guhyam / mad-bhaktesv abhidhasyati

bhaktim mayi param krtva / mam evaisyaty asamsayah

(Completely abandoning all bodily and mental dharma, such as varna and asrama, fully surrender to Me alone. I shall liberate you from all reactions to your sins. Do not grieve.

You should never explain this essence of Gita-sastra to anyone whose senses are uncontrolled, who is a non-devotee, who is devoid of a serving mood, or who is envious of Me.

He who instructs this most confidential knowledge of Gita-sastra to My bhaktas will attain para bhakti unto Me, and becoming free from all doubts, he will finally attain Me.)

Chapter 16, Sloka 19

aneka-citta-vibhranta / moha-jala-samavrtah
prasaktah kama-bhogesu / patanti narake 'sucau

(Perplexed by many desires and anxieties, entangled in a net of delusion, and excessively addicted to sense enjoyment, they fall into situations that are impure and hellish.)

Chapter 18, Sloka 65

manmana bhava mad-bhakto / mad-yaji mam namaskuru
mam evaisyasi satyam te / pratijane priyo 'si me

(Offer your mind to Me; become My bhakta by hearing and chanting, etc. about My names, forms, qualities and pastimes; worship Me and offer obeisances to Me. In this way, you will certainly come to Me. I promise you this truthfully because you are very dear to Me.)

Chapter 18, Sloka 66

sarva-dharman parityajya / mam ekam saranam vraja
aham tvam sarva-papebhyo / moksayisyami ma sucah

(Completely abandoning all bodily and mental dharma, such as varna and asrama, fully surrender to Me alone. I shall liberate you from all reactions to your sins. Do not grieve.)

Chapter 18, Sloka 67

idante natapaskaya / nabhaktaya kadacana
na casusrusave vacyam / na ca mam yo 'bhyasuyati

(You should never explain this essence of Gita-sastra to anyone whose senses are uncontrolled, who is a non-devotee, who is devoid of a serving mood, or who is envious of Me.)

Chapter 18, Sloka 68

ya imam paramam guhyam / mad-bhaktesv abhidhasyati
bhaktim mayi param krtva / mam evaisyaty asamsayah

( He who instructs this most confidential knowledge of Gita-sastra to My bhaktas will attain para bhakti unto Me, and becoming free from all doubts, he will finally attain Me.)

Subject: Re: [iyfdelhi] Re: Jesus- the incarnation of Lord ( Who told you so
?)

Hare Krishna

Question - Some people are telling Krsna and christ are same. But, they are >unwilling to give same consideration to Lord Siva whose philosophy is >very much closer to that of Krishna.

Answer - We ,all being conditioned by modes of material nature, are not able to judge the position of great personalities like Lord Krishna, Lord Shiva and Lord Jesus Christ.

So, It does not matter what is the opinion of people, what matters is the opinion of Vedic scriptures and its true followers (Acharyas) as they can see the things as they are.

So, Devotees ,before accepting any theory, test its authenticity, on the basis of Guru, sadhu and Sastra.

As far as Lord jesus criest is concerned, the article

* http://www.iskcon.com/new/050211_opinion.htm

never considers jesus same as Lord Krishna, rather it is explained into it that He is empowered incarnation of Supreme Lord Krishna, which means he was specifically empowered to preach the message of God.

Here is a related conversation between father Emmanuel Jungclaussen, a Benedictine monk from Niederalteich
Monastery and ISKCON founder acharya Srila prabhupada (Taken from Book Science of self realization..chapter-4)

Srila Prabhupäda: What is the meaning of the word Christ?

Father Emmanuel: Christ comes from the Greek word Christos, meaning "the anointed one."

Srila Prabhupäda: Christos is the Greek version of the word Kåñëa.

Father Emmanuel: This is very interesting.

Srila Prabhupäda: When an Indian person calls on Kåñëa, he often says, "Kåñöa." Kåñöa is a Sanskrit word meaning "attraction." So when we address God as "Christ," "Kåñöa," or "Kåñëa," we indicate the same all attractive Supreme Personality of Godhead. When Jesus said, "Our Father, who an in heaven, sanctified be Thy name," that name of God
was "Kåñöa" or "Kåñëa." Do you agree?

Father Emmanuel: I think Jesus, as the son of God, has revealed to us the actual name of God: Christ. We can call God "Father," but if we want to address Him by His actual name, we have to say "Christ."

Srila Prabhupäda: Yes. "Christ" is another way of saying Kåñöa, and "Kåñöa" is another way of pronouncing Kåñëa, the name of God.

This conversation between two great personalities clearly says that Lord Jesus has always been considered as son of God even by christians. His teachings are for elevating the consciousness of people, that is another point that now christians are killing cows and eating meat on the name of
bible ( which never teaches all this).

As far as Lord Shiva is concerened, vedic scriptures clearly states :

                 kshiram yatha dadhi vikara-visesha-yogat
sanjayate na hi tatah prithag asti hetoh
yah sambhutam api tatha samupaiti karyad
                  govindam adi-purusham tam aham bhajami

                           (Brahma-Samhita 5.45)

Lord Brahma is glorifying Lord Krishna in thisd verse by saying :

Just  as  milk is transformed into curd by the action of acids, but yet the effect  curd is neither same as, nor different from, its cause, viz., milk, so  I  adore  the  primeval  Lord  Govinda of whom the state of Sambhu is a
transformation for the performance of the work of destruction.

In  purport  ,  Srila bhaktisiddhanta saraswati thakur (spiritual master of Srila Prabhupada) explains :

Sambhu  is  not  a  second Godhead other than Krishna. Those, who entertain such  discriminating  sentiment, commit a great offense against the Supreme Lord. The supremacy of Sambhu is subservient to that of Govinda; hence they are not really different from each other.

as you said

Question - But, they are unwilling to give same consideration to Lord Siva whose philosophy is very much closer to that of Krishna.

Answer - Lord Shiva has no separate philosophy than Krishna, He always meditates on the form of Lord Sankarshana (who is an expansion of Lord Krishna Himself).

Vaishnavas always give proper respect to Lord Shiva as stated in the above verse.

Hope this will try to help in understanding, the real nature of these great personalities.

Hare Krishna

Your servant,

Nartak Gauranga Das

Woman barbers to wield holy scissors
TIMES NEWS NETWORK[ FRIDAY, APRIL 01, 2005 01:48:07 AM ]

Sign into earnIndiatimes points

TIRUPATI: Women have broken yet another glass ceiling. The long-awaited issue of recruiting woman barbers at Kalyanakatta--the enclosure where people get themselves tonsured--at Tirumala was resolved on Thursday when the TTD board gave its green signal to the proposal.

The proposal to recruit woman barbers was initiated in 2001 when P Krishnaiah was the TTD executive officer. But since then, the issue has been hanging fire. Ex officio board member B Karunakar Reddy said the board would now analyse the flow of woman devotees visiting Tirumala and recruit barbers accordingly.

In recent times, the district chief of the Nayee Brahmin Sangh, Radha Devi, Tirupati member Inugonda Aravinda have been making a hue and cry over the issue and threatened to launch protests if the TTD failed to give its assent to these recruitments.

With the board giving the green signal, they said they were pleased that their struggle had borne fruit. Inugonda Subramanyam, state president and founding father of the Nayee Brahmin Sangham, thanked the TTD for its decision.
He said recruitment of woman barbers would minimise corruption at Kalyanakatta and woman devotees would feel comfortable having their heads tonsured.

I Have a question regarding : American Panchangam.

I am in dire need of a North American Panchangam (specifically a Pacific Time panchangam.) As North America has a wide geographical area, when it comes to plotting horoscopes, the Indian Ganitha Panchangam is not all that useful owing to the latitude/longitude & time difference with India.

I saw that "Council of Hindu Temples" has a panchangam that's north american based. But I am not too sure if this is EST or accomodates even PST, and Central time zone.

Added later: <!--QuoteBegin-->QUOTE<!--QuoteEBegin-->The ending moments of tithi, nakshatra etc. are given in EASTERN TIME, applicable to New York, NY for which place this Panchãngam is prepared. We can use these for other places with proper corrections, because these calculations are geocentric based and therefore, <b>ending moments of these phenomena are simultaneous for all places on earth.</b>
<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

In this context I have some questions:

1) Does anyone have an American Panchangam? And if so, is it quite accurate?
2) Is there any software that is commercially available (or freeware) that can RELIABLY and ACCURATELY plot a horoscope (I don’t care about 'predictions' from the software. I am looking for pinpoint accuracy in positions.)
3) How do you (or someone you know) plot horoscopes for North American born kids? <!--emo&Smile--><img src='style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Aloke Sharma / Meerut

The popularity of Swami Ramdev's yoga can be judged from the fact that people are changing their schedule to attend it. This fact came into the light here when an organising committee announced a weeklong yoga camp of the Swami in Kailash Prakash Stadium from Monday.

People from all religion attended the camp to solve their health problems. Ministers of the district Shahid Manjoor and Hazi Yaqub also showed their interest in yoga camp.

Shahid Manjoor's wife has decided to attend the camp regularly and and the minister has declared that he would greet the Swami himself .While another minister Hazi Yaqub would also attend the camp to get rid of his sugar problem. Many other VIP have showed interest in the camp .

The response is so overwhelming that district administration had to change the traffic routes.People were informed through advertisements and hoardings for registration and other formalities in order to attend the camp.

District Magistrate Chandra Bhanu visited the proposed site and ordered to ensure proper arrangements for the followers, who were supposed to come from nearby districts also.

Swami ji reached Meerut on Sunday afternoon and performed a puja at the place of the camp. Minister Shahid Manjoor welcomed Swami ji and all the officials, leading industrialists, businessmen and other influential people were present to greet him.

Talking to media persons, Swami Ramdev said he is not against science but there are many problems and diseases, which could be cured by yoga and that way the use of medicines in regular life could be avoided. <!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

<!--QuoteBegin-->QUOTE<!--QuoteEBegin-->In US, Indian history 'detoxed'
INDIAWEST[ THURSDAY, MAY 12, 2005 10:31:15 AM ]

FAIRFAX, Virginia: A concerted yearlong campaign by Indian American
parents in Virginia's Fairfax County has resulted in a revision of
textbooks on Indian history, ensuring that children will not look at
Indian culture as mere " karma , cows and caste".

Businesswoman Sandhya Kumar, engineer Rakesh Bahadur and dozens of
other Indian American parents launched the campaign to change the way
their history is taught in Fairfax, the nation's 12th-largest school
system, The Washington Post said in a recent report.

Their lobbying prompted school officials to rethink presentations on
India and Hinduism in classrooms and sparked efforts to develop a more
sophisticated and thoughtful curriculum, it added.

Balaji Hebbar, a George Washington University religion professor who
was one of three scholars hired by Fairfax County to review the books
cited by the group of Indian parents, told the Post he and his
colleagues found few factual errors in the older textbooks. But the
lessons boiled down a complex culture to " karma , cows and caste."

"It's as if I were making a picture book of the United States, and I
took pictures of the bad parts of D.C., the run-down parts of New York
City and the smoke stacks of Cleveland, and left out the Golden Gate
Bridge and the Statue of Liberty," Hebbar told the Post. "I would be
telling the truth, but I would only be telling half the truth."

Fairfax County educators reportedly responded admirably to the parents' views.

The parents challenged some facts, but many complaints centered on
emphasis, omission or even nuances in the way the authors presented
Hinduism, the Post said.

In response, the educators first sent a memo telling teachers that
students who selected India as a topic for a project should be guided
away from the textbook...

... and given other material.

Then, last fall, schools put forward for public review a new round of
world history textbooks for fifth, ninth and 10th grades -replacements
for those approved in 1997.

Officials also invited parents and any other interested residents to
offer comments. Bahadur reportedly returned with a long critique and
the signatures of 118 people who supported his views.

"We read them, and we really couldn't fairly respond," said Ann
Monday, assistant superintendent for instructional services. "Quite
frankly, none of us had a depth of knowledge in the field."

So she delayed submitting the books to the school board for approval
and called in the professors as well as history teacher Asheesh Misra
to weigh in on the matter, the Post said.

Misra and the professors did not agree with all of Bahadur's conclusions.

But they recommended that teachers expand their lessons on topics
including Hindu writings; the value system, including the four stages
of life; reincarnation and salvation.

Based on the concerns shared by Fairfax educators, five publishers
have made modest changes in the texts, and the panel of professors has
recommended that the county purchase eight revised books, reject one
and supplement the curriculum with other materials, the report said.

<!--QuoteBegin-->QUOTE<!--QuoteEBegin--><b>Delhiites have the worst civic sense: DU study </b>
Sonia Sarkar/ New Delhi
They spit and litter anywhere on roads. They encroach public spaces. They are unapologetic if they push aside someone and don't hesitate to use abusive language in public. This particular species might sound familiar as they are non other than Delhiites.

In a recent study conducted by the Delhi University's (DU) Anthropology department, it was observed that Delhiites have the worst civic sense, its immaterial whether the person is a resident of the congested Walled City or the elite community member of the posh Vasant Kunj. In the study, behavioural pattern among residents in 20 different parts of the city was observed for 30 minutes, for seven consecutive days. Observations were made on how they spit, litter, encroach into public places, their social etiquettes and traffic sense.

"People of all age groups spit incautiously anywhere and everywhere. They were also found throwing things everywhere," was the observations made while following the behavioural habits of the Chandni Chowk residents. Similar behaviour was observed in Bhogal and Vasant Kunj areas where the denizens did not use "public toilets" and instead "used walls to urinate." They were also caught spitting paan, gutka or saliva on to the roads."

Most of these perpetrators are between the age group of 21 to 50. If their disgusting habits were objected upon, these denizens defend their conduct and come up with a smart excuse. "It is nature's call and needs immediate attention, so we cannot wait around searching for a public toilet, was the immediate response from people whose actions we objected to," said Fazia Fazhana, who studied the behavioural patterns among Bhogal residents.

While observing the residents of Shalimar Bagh, occupied primarily by the high profile government officers, it was found that they lack "social etiquettes". "Middle aged men are caught using abusive words during normal conversation and are unrepentant and aggressive at times even if they are the ones guilty of misbehaviour on roads," said Abha Mishra, who observed the Shalimar Bagh residents.

In almost the entire city, people travelling in four wheelers are frequently caught flouting traffic rules. "Parked cars often encroach public places, commuters on four wheelers and two wheelers are often caught breaking signals and loud music constantly blares out of cars," revealed the study, which was also conducted in Lodhi colony, Connaught Place, Inderpuri, Mukherjee Nagar, Pitampura, Yamuna Vihar, Inderpuri among others.

"This observation aims at studying the behavioural pattern of the city residents. Though, a diversity was noticed in the citizens' behaviour, according to the area they reside in, but not many differences were found in the general spitting behaviour," said Prof P C Joshi of the department, who led the team.
